A princess of the shade with a survivor's temperament

In apartments where light hesitates to enter, where so many plants languish like forgotten promises, the Aglaonema quietly unfurls its leaves of silver, jade, cream or pink. It asks for neither a dazzling conservatory nor a spectacular stage setting: a bright corner without scorching sun is enough for it to establish its silent elegance.

But this gentleness is deceptive. Beneath its satiny foliage hides a genuine aroid, armed with tiny irritating crystals. Behind its reputation as an easy plant lies a tropical species sensitive to cold, able to tolerate a relatively dark room but much less a waterlogged substrate or a wintry draught. The Aglaonema is thus made of seductive contradictions: robust in the shade, vulnerable to cold, sumptuous without showy flowers, and welcoming to the eye while remaining unwelcome in the mouth of a child or an animal.

Its name, moreover, does not refer to a single species but to an entire botanical genus. According to the classification currently adopted by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, the genus Aglaonema comprises 26 accepted species, naturally distributed from north-eastern India to Papua New Guinea. Botany and biology: an unmistakable aroid

The Aglaonema belongs to the family Araceae and to the order Alismatales. It therefore shares its kinship with philodendrons, anthuriums, spathiphyllums, arums, pothos and dieffenbachias. Its family membership is revealed above all when it flowers: what one would readily take for a single flower is in fact an inflorescence composed of a spadix, a fleshy axis bearing numerous tiny flowers, partially enveloped by a spathe, usually greenish or greenish-white. The plant forms a persistent herbaceous clump whose stems, discreet at first, lengthen and with age take on the look of small ringed canes. Each scar recalls the position of a former leaf, as if the plant kept on its trunk the calendar of its growth. The roots are fleshy and need a medium that is simultaneously moist and well oxygenated: they appreciate a regular water supply, but quickly suffocate when all the pores of the substrate remain filled with water.

The leaves, borne on the sheathing petioles characteristic of the Araceae, are entire, oval, elliptic or lanceolate depending on the species and cultivars. Their blade may be dark green, silvery grey, cream white, yellowish green, pink, salmon or red. Some varieties seem to have been brushed with liquid metal along the midrib; others bear scarlet borders that suggest an ember running beneath the epidermis.

The resemblance to the dieffenbachia can be real, particularly among green and silver forms. One useful identification character lies in the venation: the Aglaonema generally shows five to eight well-marked main lateral veins, while the dieffenbachia usually shows more. Aglaonemas also tend to form more compact clumps and finer stems, even though the certain identification of a horticultural hybrid sometimes remains delicate. (plants.ces.ncsu.edu)

After pollination, the spadix can produce fleshy, oval fruits that turn red at maturity. Each usually contains a single large seed surrounded by a relatively thin pulp. These berries are decorative, but they must never be eaten. Indoors, the inflorescences and fruits are often removed so that the plant devotes more resources to its foliage and keeps a dense silhouette. (ask.ifas.ufl.edu)

Wild species live mainly in the humid, heavily shaded tropical forests of Asia. This origin explains their ability to exploit diffuse light, filtered by several layers of vegetation. It does not mean, however, that they can live without light: in prolonged darkness, growth slows, internodes elongate and coloured variegation may lose some of its intensity.

From Asian forests to Western living rooms

The genus was published by the Austrian botanist Heinrich Wilhelm Schott on 8 September 1829 in the Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Litteratur, Theater und Mode. Schott was one of the great historical specialists of the Araceae, a family whose singular inflorescences long intrigued European botanists. (ipni.org)

The name Aglaonema comes from the Greek aglaos, evoking what is brilliant or splendid, and nêma, the thread. This image would refer to the stamens visible on the spadix: a "glittering thread" hidden in the heart of a plant admired above all for its leaves. (ahdictionary.com)

Long before its arrival in Western collections, the Aglaonema was cultivated in China and other parts of Asia as an ornamental plant associated with luck and prosperity. This long tradition explains its English name of Chinese evergreen, literally "evergreen from China", even though the natural range of the genus extends well beyond China. Its documented introduction into the Western horticultural world dates back to 1885. Commercial production then became important in Florida from the 1930s onwards, before interior decorators fully recognised, a few decades later, its remarkable behaviour under low light. The real horticultural revolution, however, was hybridisation. The old forms, often green or silver, were gradually joined by plants that were more compact, more branched and far more colourful. During the 1990s, no fewer than 29 Aglaonema hybrids obtained a plant patent in the United States. Breeding programmes, notably that of the University of Florida, created or distributed cultivars such as 'Golden Bay', 'Emerald Bay', 'Diamond Bay', 'Moonlight Bay', 'Stripes', 'Key Lime', 'Leprechaun' and 'Scenic Bay'. A charming breeding anecdote accompanies 'Leprechaun'. This cultivar did not come from a planned cross but from a spontaneous mutation that appeared on a population of 'Silver Bay'. The different shoot was isolated, multiplied by apical cuttings, and then observed for three years. Its dwarf growth, generous branching and rounded silhouette proved stable, turning a botanical anomaly into a commercial cultivar. (ask.ifas.ufl.edu)

Cultivation and care: offering a tropical clearing in the home

The Aglaonema likes bright but filtered light, comparable to that which filters through forest foliage. Dark green varieties such as 'Maria' generally tolerate dimmer locations better. Highly silver, white, pink or red forms need more generous indirect light to keep their colours. Direct sun, especially behind a south- or west-facing window, can cause discoloured then brown patches, true burns of the blade. (ask.ifas.ufl.edu)

In the Belgian climate, the Aglaonema must be considered a houseplant. It can stay outside during a mild summer period, in bright shade and sheltered from wind, but it must be brought in well before the first cold nights. A usual temperature of approximately between 18 and 27 °C suits it. Temperatures below 13 °C can already cause cold injuries in several cultivars, while 'Silver Queen' is known to be particularly sensitive. Symptoms sometimes appear afterwards in the form of translucent, greyish or brown zones. (ask.ifas.ufl.edu)

Watering demands more discernment than generosity. You must moisten the whole root ball, let the excess drain away, then wait until the top of the substrate has dried slightly before starting again. A plant placed in a cool, dark room consumes much less water than a specimen set in abundant indirect light in summer. Permanently leaving water in a cachepot amounts to turning the root zone into an oxygen-free swamp, an ideal situation for root decline.

The substrate must be light, stable and aerated. A tropical plant mix enriched with plant fibres, fine bark, perlite or another draining material suits better than a compact potting soil. In professional production, the University of Florida recommends a total porosity of 50 to 75%, an air-filled pore space of 10 to 20% and a pH close to 6 to 6.5. These figures recall a fundamental principle: the Aglaonema wants moisture around its roots, but it also wants to breathe. (ask.ifas.ufl.edu)

From spring to early autumn, moderate fertilisation accompanies growth. At home, a complete fertiliser strongly diluted, applied to an already moist substrate, is generally enough. An excess of mineral salts causes marginal burns, dry tips and sometimes root damage. Growers can work with a nutrient ratio close to ( 3 : 1 : 2 ) for ( N : P_2O_5 : K_2O ), while regularly monitoring the pH and electrical conductivity of the substrate solution. The average atmospheric humidity of a dwelling is often tolerated, but a very dry atmosphere can brown the tips and encourage mites. It is better to increase the overall humidity around the plants than to keep wetting the foliage. Good air circulation reduces the risk of disease, whereas leaves that remain moist and pressed against one another offer bacteria an ideal entry point.

When the stem lengthens and the base becomes bare, the plant can be rejuvenated by cuttings. A head bearing several leaves is taken with a disinfected tool, then placed in an aerated substrate kept slightly moist and warm. Stem sections bearing at least one node can also produce new shoots, but they are more sensitive to rot. Dividing basal offshoots is the simplest method: each division must keep healthy roots and at least one growing point.

Sowing is biologically possible from fresh seeds harvested from ripe fruits, but it remains slow and does not guarantee the fidelity of hybrids. Sexual reproduction creates diversity; it does not copy a cultivar. To keep exactly the colours and habit of a horticultural selection, vegetative propagation must be used.

Professional recommendations published in the early 2000s still presented cuttings and division as the main methods, micropropagation then being considered difficult for this genus. The sector has since progressed: modern cultivars are today produced and distributed by in vitro culture, notably under licence. This evolution illustrates the commercial importance of the Aglaonema and the progress made in mastering contamination, regeneration and varietal stability. (ask.ifas.ufl.edu)

Diseases, pests and messages written on the leaves

The Aglaonema is not a particularly sickly plant when its needs are respected. Its most frequent problems are physiological: they result from watering, temperature, light or fertilisation before being caused by a pest.

Yellow leaves associated with a constantly moist substrate should make you suspect asphyxiation or the start of root rot. Healthy roots are firm and light-coloured; affected roots turn brown, soft and sometimes smelly. You must then remove the decomposed parts with a disinfected tool, repot into a fresh, porous mix, and durably correct the watering. Conversely, a very dry plant can let its leaves droop, but these often recover their posture after gradual rehydration.

Brown tips frequently indicate dry air, salt build-up, irregular watering or the repeated use of highly mineralised water. A pale colouring and leaves held almost vertically can betray excessive light. A stretched, soft and sparse growth rather reveals a lack of light. (ask.ifas.ufl.edu)

Mealybugs settle in the leaf axils in the form of white cottony masses. Scale insects look like small brown scales stuck to the petioles and veins. Aphids can colonise young shoots, while spider mites, or "red spiders", cause a fine yellowish stippling accompanied, during heavy attacks, by almost invisible webbing. Regular inspection of the undersides of the leaves, immediate isolation of new plants and careful cleaning of tools represent the first lines of defence. (plants.ces.ncsu.edu)

In the nursery, caution must be greater. The Aglaonema can suffer leaf spots and rots caused by bacteria belonging notably to the genera Pseudomonas and Xanthomonas. Diseases due to Colletotrichum, Fusarium, Pythium, Phytophthora, Rhizoctonia, Cercospora or Myrothecium are also reported. The tissues then become spotted, watery, necrotic or soft, depending on the responsible agent. Visual diagnosis is not always enough to distinguish a fungus from a bacterium; on a production site, a sample analysed by a laboratory avoids inappropriate treatments. (ipm.ucanr.edu)

For the grower, prevention rests on the sanitary quality of the starting material, inspection of cuttings on receipt, disinfection of equipment, spacing of batches, keeping pots off the ground, efficient drainage and avoiding waterings that splash several plants. Any plant protection products eventually used must be authorised for the crop, the use, the country and the target organism; a recommendation published in the United States does not automatically constitute an authorisation in Belgium or in the European Union.

Commercial beauty, medicinal claims and very real toxicity

The Aglaonema's main interest is aesthetic. Its evergreen foliage brings colour all year round and withstands locations where few variegated plants remain presentable. Green and silver forms suit offices, lobbies, hotels and sober plant compositions. Red, pink and salmon cultivars play more the role of a permanent bouquet.

'Silver Bay' bears a large silvery grey zone framed with green. 'Maria', darker and more compact, is reputed to be shade-tolerant. 'Silver Queen' keeps a classic pattern of green and silver stripes, but proves sensitive to cold. 'Stripes' underlines its veins with light bands. 'Siam Aurora' combines a green blade with dark pink veins and borders. 'Red Valentine' and 'Ruby Crab' offer leaves dominated by pink, while 'Bold Forest' marries yellow and dark green. Plants sold under the names 'Pink Star', 'Cherry Baby', 'Salmon Fantasy', 'Orange Star' or 'Kiwi' show the market's current passion for warm-coloured foliage. (edis.ifas.ufl.edu)

Commercial nomenclature nonetheless demands caution. Several cultivars circulate under synonyms, range names or appellations that vary between growers. A label bearing only "red Aglaonema" does not allow the genetic identification of a selection. For a professional purchase, you must seek a supplier able to provide the full cultivar name, its protection status, its sanitary origin and, where applicable, its propagation authorisation.

In Belgium, the Aglaonema is available in physical garden centres and from specialist online shops. As of 20 August 2026, assortments were notably presented by Intratuin Belgique, Garden Center Wemmel, Fleur-Direct Belgique, WePlant and Bakker Belgique. Stocks and commercial names change rapidly; it is therefore preferable to verify actual availability and to favour a stocky, well-rooted plant, free of wet spots, mealybugs and transport damage. Certain Aglaonema species have been the subject of ethnobotanical uses or preliminary research. Extracts of Aglaonema hookerianum, for example, have shown cytotoxic and antibacterial activities in laboratory assays. Such results prove neither a therapeutic efficacy in humans nor a safety of use. Above all, they do not justify the domestic preparation of tisanes, powders or extracts. (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov)

The Aglaonema is not a food supplement and must not be used for self-medication. No domestic medicinal use can be recommended on the basis of available data. An activity observed on cells, bacteria or larvae does not make a medicine; it may on the contrary reveal a biological toxicity that requires further research.

All parts of the plant contain insoluble crystals of calcium oxalate. These microscopic crystals, often compared to needles, mechanically attack the mucous membranes when a piece of leaf or stem is chewed. In humans, exposure can cause an immediate burning sensation, mouth pain, irritation of the lips, tongue and throat, profuse salivation, difficulty swallowing and sometimes digestive disorders. In cats and dogs, ingestion can lead to oral irritation, swelling of the mouth, excessive salivation, vomiting and difficulty swallowing. The ASPCA classifies Aglaonema modestum among the plants toxic to dogs, cats and horses. The plant must therefore be placed out of reach of young children and animals that chew foliage. (aspca.org)

In case of contact with the sap, rinse the skin or eyes abundantly with water. After chewing or ingestion, do not induce vomiting or administer an improvised remedy. Remove the plant debris gently from the mouth, rinse it and quickly contact the Belgian Poison Centre, a doctor or a veterinarian, depending on the person or animal concerned. Breathing difficulty, significant swelling or inability to swallow requires urgent medical care.

A living mosaic, to be contemplated with respect

The Aglaonema possesses that rare talent of turning shade into décor. Its leaves seem to borrow their colours from ore, velvet and tropical sunsets; its care remains accessible, its propagation rewards patience, and its extraordinary diversity feeds as much the passion of the collector as the work of breeders and growers.

One must nevertheless never confuse ease with invulnerability. A drowned root ball, a delivery that is too cold or a bacterial contamination can ruin a batch, while its oxalate crystals impose genuine vigilance in homes frequented by children or animals. Well chosen, well lit and watered with measure, the Aglaonema nonetheless becomes a very long-lived companion, a small hand-painted forest that slowly renews its foliage.

And you, would you prefer the silvery nobility of a 'Silver Bay', the vegetal depth of a 'Maria' or the almost unreal radiance of a pink and red Aglaonema?
